Important Destinations in Africa

South Africa - 'A land of flowers, wine and whale song'

Covering a huge swathe of land, washed by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, South Africa has enormous wealth above and below ground, making it one of the richest natural storehouses on the planet. With staggeringly beautiful rural areas such as the Cape Winelands, the towering dunes of the Wild Coast, the magnificent game parks of Kruger and Zululand, and the Kalahari and Karoo Deserts, barren for much of the year but a carpet of flowers in spring, the possibilities for tourists are endless. Alternatively visit sophisticated cities such as Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town, or charming historic towns like Stellenbosch or Pietermaritzburg. Even once infamous townships such as Soweto are now growing into vibrant cities in their own right.

South Africa is a 'rainbow nation' of many colours and cultures, encompassing Zulu, Tswana, Khosa, Sotho, Indian, Afrikaans and those of British origin. The scars left by the apartheid years are slowly healing, but have left huge inequalities between rich and poor. Despite this, the people are charming hosts, most speak English and all have a fascinating story to tell. The crime rate is still far too high, but with a little common sense, travellers can have a perfect, safe holiday.

Egypt - 'An ancient river of life in a sea of sand'

In 430BC, when Herodotos exclaimed in awe over the magnificent monuments in Egypt, many of them were already 2500 years old. Most, from the pyramids of Giza to the astonishingly beautiful temples of Karnac or Philae, or the painted tombs in the Valley of the Kings, can still be visited today. The sheer age of this great civilisation is mind-blowing.

With high levels of heat, confusion, hassle and stomach bugs to contend with, Egypt is not an easy country for travellers, although greatly improved security measures mean anti-Western activities have been largely curtailed. And for those prepared to brave a few discomforts, this extraordinary country assaults the senses.

The life-giving Nile pours across the map, feeding an emerald ribbon of irrigated fields adjacent to villages shaded by date palms. Whether on a cruise ship or traditional felucca, life on the water is a constant visual feast, while the few huge, dusty cities - Cairo, Alexandria, Aswan and Luxor - are a babble of exotic sounds and smells.

Hurghada and Sharm el Sheik, on the Red Sea coast, are doors to a magical underwater world of technicolour fish and coral favoured by divers, while other adventurous travellers head inland. Here, you can discover monasteries amid the arid mountains of Sinai or the distant desert oases, homes of the hardy nomads whose camel trains still wander the Saharan sands.

Pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx

The Pyramids at Giza are among the best-known ancient monuments in the world and the only one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world still standing. Of the three pyramids, the Great Pyramid of Cheops, which consists of two million blocks of stone, is the oldest and largest; it was built between 2589 and 2566 BC by the IV Dynasty pharaoh Khufu and is 140m (482ft) high. Of the other two pyramids, the Pyramid of Chephren, which is sometimes known as the Second Pyramid, is the more famous due to its imposing size, with its base once covering an area of 216 sq metres (2325 sq ft). It was discovered in 1818 and is situated to the southwest of Cheops. Although it appears to be taller than the Great Pyramid, as it stands on higher ground, this pyramid, which was built by Khufu's son Khafre, is actually smaller than Cheops. The third pyramid, the Pyramid of Mycerinus, which stands some 67m (220ft) high, was started by Khafre's successor, Menkaure, although he died before it was completed. The famous Sphinx, which is called Abu el-Hol in Arabic, stands in front of the Great Pyramid, with the body of a lion joined to the head of a man. The Sphinx, which is 60m (200ft) long and 20m (65ft) high, was carved over 4500 years ago out of a single block of sandstone left over from building the Great Pyramid. The sights at Giza are among the most famous in the world and continue to fascinate hordes of visitors every year. There is a Sound and Light show every night at Giza which adds to the atmosphere surrounding these mysterious ancient sights.
